Co-Founder of TickX
Sam has been passionate about both business and technology from a young age, starting his first tech company, Bidmarine, an online auction site for the marine industry, aged just 14. Impressed at his keen interest in tech and self-taught programming ability, Harvard University took the unusual step of offering him a week’s work experience within their IT infrastructure department in Boston.
Aged 16 he setup SAMTEQ, a software development company and by 17 and while still in full-time education was employing his father and had an office in the local town. After turning down unconditional offers to study at St. Andrews University, Sam continued to grow SAMTEQ, developing software including management systems for marina’s, distilleries, associations and gym chains as well as touch screen surveys for customers including the NHS, RSPB, Balmoral Castle & Sport Scotland. The systems created by Sam are now used across the UK, continental Europe and Australia and manage millions of transactions, emails and users every year.
In 2015 Sam joined forces with Steve Pearce to co-found TickX, a search engine and comparison site for events. To date TickX has raised £4m from BGF Ventures, Ministry of Sound & 24 Haymarket, turned down offers on BBC Dragons’ Den and had over 1m people use TickX in 2017 . Leading the way in the market TickX is currently rolling out 3D seating maps for West End Theatre and has recently launched the world’s first event search and ticket comparison chatbot.
In creating TickX Sam has used his extensive programming experience in multiple sectors alongside his ability to do everything from user interface design to front and back end development to database management.
Outside of work, Sam is keen to inspire young people into entrepreneurship and technology, often talking at local schools. He has since been invited to present gold Duke of Edinburgh awards alongside the Earl of Wessex, host the Argyll Youth Awards and talk at various summits and conferences.
